About Sarah Anderson, FNP-C
Sarah Anderson is an innovative Family Nurse Practitioner, board-certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, with a mission to empower individuals to achieve optimal health and vitality. As we age, our bodies naturally become deficient in hormones and micronutrients. We also experience gut imbalances and food sensitivities as we age. By identifying these deficiencies and sources of gut inflammation, Sarah offers a personalized approach that transforms traditional healthcare into a holistic journey toward wellness.
With a strong academic foundation—including a double BA in psychology and exercise physiology from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, a BS in Nursing from Norfolk State University, and a Master of Science/FNP from Simmons University in Boston, bioidentical hormone replacement certification through WorldLink Medical and ongoing education from Functional Medicine University—Sarah is at the forefront of integrative medicine. She seamlessly blends cutting-edge medical treatments with alternative therapies, such as bioidentical hormone and thyroid replacement, nutritional supplementation, identification of food sensitivities, detoxification, and lifestyle modifications, offering her patients solutions that go beyond symptom management to true healing.
Sarah's belief that the body is created in God's image drives her commitment to personalized, compassionate care. Her forward-thinking approach empowers patients to take control of their health, addressing the root causes of their concerns while promoting lasting vitality and disease prevention. By staying ahead of the latest advances in both traditional and alternative medicine, Sarah ensures her patients receive the highest quality care and support on their journey to optimal health. With a deep focus on each patient’s unique needs and life experiences, Sarah provides comprehensive care that goes far beyond the ordinary. Her commitment to helping people restore balance and vitality makes her a leader in integrative healthcare, guiding patients to reclaim their health with confidence and compassion.

What is Functional Medicine?Functional Medicine offers a science-backed, holistic approach to healthcare that aims to uncover and address the underlying causes of illness. While conventional medicine typically centers on diagnosing conditions and managing symptoms—often with medications—Functional Medicine takes a proactive stance. It seeks to identify the root cause of health issues and restore the body’s natural balance, addressing system-wide imbalances rather than merely alleviating symptoms. As a relatively new yet rapidly growing field, Functional Medicine is becoming a leading model of care due to its transformative outcomes. Many individuals who have struggled with chronic illness find hope through this approach, often achieving levels of health and wellness they once believed were beyond reach—free from long-term medications and their potential side effects.

What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?Hormone therapy involves utilizing hormones to address and restore the balance of hormones within the human body. Hormone imbalances, often associated with aging, can manifest in various symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, anxiety, weight gain, muscle loss, joint pain, and disrupted sleep. At Anderson Integrative Medicine in Chesapeake, VA, our provider specializes in providing bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, seamlessly integrated with functional medicine practices, to help patients not only alleviate the adverse effects of hormone imbalances but to also optimize overall well-being as they age. Each treatment plan is meticulously tailored to align with individual medical histories, health statuses, and lifestyle preferences.

Does my insurance cover any costs? Please note that our practice does not bill insurance directly. Payment is accepted in the form of cash, bank check or any major credit card at the time of service. A superbill can be requested after certain visits which can be submitted to your insurance company for possible/partial reimbursement. Reimbursements are not guaranteed, and we have no way of knowing whether your insurance company will reimburse you at all. Please do not ask us to call your insurance company as we do not have the staff to do so. Most labs are covered by insurance. Specialty or functional tests may not be covered by insurance, but that will be discussed at the time of service so that there will be no surprises for you. Co-pays for labs/testing may be incurred as we have no way to determine your particular coverage. Functional/hormone visit fees and IV's are not covered by insurance directly. A Superbill may be requested for certain visit types and partial coverage may be reimbursed by your commercial health insurance company. Healthshares have historically been more generous in their reimbursement coverage for hormone/functional visits when a Superbill is submitted. ALL SERVICES PROVIDED BY ANDERSON INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE ARE COVERED BY HSA/FSA DOLLARS.

What do I do when I need my ADHD medication refilled? If you have not been seen by our medical provider within the last 3 months, you must call the office to schedule an appointment. If you have seen our provider within the last 3 months, please call your pharmacy to request your next prescription. Remember that controlled substances NEVER show a refill on the label/bottle. Three individual monthly prescriptions are sent during your visit, and the pharmacy will only fill them every 28-30 days. Each pharmacy has its own policies, so you must ask them specific questions about their refill practices. If you are experiencing stock issues with your current pharmacy and have found stock at another pharmacy, please DO NOT call the office. Instead, email Sarah@AndersonIntMed.com with the new pharmacy's name, address and ZIP CODE, the medication name, the dose being requested, the number of times taken daily, and the total number of tablets/capsules being requested. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE OFFICE WITH THIS INFORMATION, AS I HAVE INSTRUCTED MY STAFF NOT TO TAKE ANY OF THESE MESSAGES BY PHONE.

If you request a dose change of a particular hormone, please do not call the office with this information. Instead, email Sarah@AndersonIntMed.com with the name of the hormone, the dose being requested, the number of capsules taken daily, and the total quantity requested. Your refill will be sent with enough quantity to get you to your next appointment.

My MD, NP, and PA told me that I cannot use hormone replacement therapies or that the therapies you provide are dangerous. Who do I believe? That's a great question! There is contradicting information out there and your PCP, MD, PA, or NP may not necessarily be privy to the most accurate and up to date information. Bioidentical hormones do NOT cause breast cancer, blood clots or strokes. If your PCP, MD, PA, or NP cites the Women’s Health Initiative study from 2001, you can be assured that their knowledge of hormone replacement is not current nor up to date. It is imperative that you work with a fully trained and certified bioidentical hormone replacement specialist so you know you are receiving the safest and most up to date treatments. Ask to see their certification for hormone-specific training. If they cannot provide one, their knowledge of this specialty should be considered inadequate and their opinions obsolete.
